Red Light Runner Accidents

Red light running is an undeniable problem across U.S. intersections. We’ve all seen someone do it. The light at the intersection turns red and someone enters the intersection regardless of the red traffic signal. It does not matter if someone was still holding onto hope of beating the light or they were just in too big of a hurry to care, this is dangerous driving behavior. We all are accountable to each other for how we share the road with one another. Should you be injured in an accident caused by a red light runner, it is likely that you will be able to seek compensation for the harm you have suffered against the red light runner or their insurance carrier.

Red Light Runner Accidents

There have been a number of efforts to try and address red light running. It is clearly a problem and many have been working to see how this type of dangerous driving behavior can be deterred. Red light cameras, for instance, have actually proved to be effective at deterring red light running. Opponents of red light cameras opine that they are a violation of privacy. These cameras, however, are on public roads that we all share, running a red light is a traffic violation which endangers others on the road, and it is very much the same as having a law enforcement officer posted at an intersection. The reality is, of course, that there is not enough law enforcement to be posted at every intersection in order to catch red light runners. Red light cameras fill this gap in coverage and have proven successful at addressing red light running.

Another measure that has proven effective at curbing red light running at intersections is appropriate signal timing. When signal timing, such as an appropriate length of time for a yellow light, is put into action, less people run red lights. This is another simple step we can take at intersections to try and address red light running.

Last, but not least, we can all do our part to prevent red light running. Furthermore, we can be defensive drivers and make moves to anticipate red light running. When you are stopped at a red light and the light turns green, be sure to pause a moment before proceeding into the intersection. Many, if not most, red light runners will run the red light right after the light changes. Pausing for a moment to let those last-minute red light runners pass through the intersection may just end up saving your life or the life of someone else. It can be well worth the couple of seconds of pausing.
